175 Years of Innovations: Recognizing UR's Contributions to Computer Science and AI

The Rochester Review Fall 2025 edition celebrates 175 years of URochester innovations, highlighting contributions from its computer science community.

Featured achievements include Dana Ballard's early work in computer vision and neural networks (Story 106, p.52), Michael Scott's development of lock-free algorithms (Story 112, p.53), Rick Rashid and Avie Tevanian's operating system foundations for macOS and iOS (Story 129, p.57), and Robert Jacobs' mixture-of-experts models that underpin modern large-scale AI (Story 116, p. 55).

The Eastman Institute for Oral Health is recognized for its smartphone app to detect early tooth decay, advanced by Jiebo Luo (Story 102, p.50). Additionally, Ehsan Hoque's long-running AI-based Parkinson’s screening research, conducted with UR CS PhD students and URMC collaborators, is highlighted (Story 104, p.51).
