Sources of Images
-
There are a lot of images hanging around the department in various
formats. One source of iff images is my directory
/u/nelson/pics, which has a number of (mostly) grayscale images of different
sorts. You are welcome to browse.
-
The directories under /p/imagedb (s4, s11, s16, s30)
contain a very large collection of images,
consisting of views taken about every 20 degrees over a sphere or hemisphere
for a number of different objects.
There are training image sets of 50 - 100 images each for about 100
different objects, plus additional test images.
All the training images and most of the test sets are on black velvet.
They were acquired for testing object recognition systems, but there may be
other uses.
There are various other collections also in this directory.
-
Another source of images is the web. You can find a lot of pictures out
there, typically as gifs, but sometimes in other formats. XV is useful for
converting these into your preferred format.
-
Finally, you can take your own pictures; in fact, you will be required to
take some during the course.
This means learning to make use of the cameras and digitizers
in the department.
