The MIT Press is pleased to announce the launch of a new refereed, archival internet journal of computer vision entitled Videre: A Journal of Computer Vision Research. Videre is soliciting papers now and will publish each article as soon as it is ready. For archival and reference purposes, papers will be organized into quarterly issues, beginning with Volume 1, Number 1 in summer 1997.
SCOPE
Videre is a refereed, archival, Internet journal of computer vision. We are soliciting high-quality original papers that are not under consideration for another journal and have not appeared elsewhere. The on-line format allows (and the editors encourage) the submission, distribution and archiving of several forms of contribution that are not possible in printed form, such as reference image data, image sequences, interactive (Java) demonstrations, source code, and author-reader interaction. The scope is all areas of computer vision, including at least the following topics.
- Active and real-time vision
- CAD-based vision
- Computational models of biological vision
- Integration of modules and cues
- Integration of vision and cognitive processes
- Invariants and geometry
- Learning in computer vision
- Medical computer vision
- Motion analysis
- Object recognition
- Physics-based vision
- Segmentation and grouping
- Sensors and low level processing
- Stereo
- Shape and object representation
- Systems and applications
- Vision and graphics
- Vision, robotics, and control
Proposals for special issues may be submitted to one of the editors.
Submissions can include research papers, tutorials, demonstrations, surveys, or short technical notes. The lack of arbitrary page limits is not meant to discourage conciseness and brevity of prose.
FORMAT & FEATURES
Videre's main form is a browsable site on the Internet: its URL is http://mitpress.mit.edu/videre.html. Non-traditional organization, such as hypertext, and non-traditional content such as animation are encouraged. Printable portions of articles will generally be available on-line in PDF format. Videre authors will be given a web page on which they can post pointers to, and solicit feedback on, working papers and other current material relevant to their published papers. Conference information, related web sites, a readers' forum, and other features are planned. The MIT Press will produce an archival version of each complete volume of Videre, which will include all media streams, on CD-ROM.
PUBLICATION SPEED
Videre pledges rapid reviewing. This, with the absence of a publication queue and distribution delays, will assure timely publication.

sandini@dist.unige.it
It should contain the authors' names, email and postal addresses, an abstract, reference to any previously published versions of this paper, and the file names chosen for FTP submission.

- File 1: Traditional, "printable" material (text, equations, images, graphics), in PostScript plus sources in LaTeX, Microsoft Word, or another format agreed upon with the editor.
- File 2 (optional): Non-traditional, multimedia material. Packaged as a Web site, readable by Netscape or Internet Explorer (HTML 3.2, MPEG, Java, GIF, JPEG...). (If these formats are not convenient, consult one of the editors.)
The FTP submissions are official and confidential. MIT Press and the editors undertake to maintain this confidentiality. The material will be available only to reviewers; after review, its disposition will be in accordance with the author's wishes.
