Quagents: Prerequisites For Running the System

In order to run Quake, you must obtain the contents of the baseq2 directory which contains the game's graphical resources (pak files). Unfortunately we are not permitted to redistribute these resources as only the source code to the engine itself is GPL licensed by Id software.

You have two alternatives:

  1. Download the Quake2 demo from Id software
  2. Buy the commercial version version of the game

Extracting the baseq2 data From the Id Demo

The easiest and cheapest way to obtain the necessary resources is to download the Quake2 Demo for Windows from Id software and extract the baseq2 directory.
  1. Download the demo program from Id software's website.
    http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quake/quake2/index.php?game_section=demo

The name of the file is q2-314-demo-x86.exe
  2. Extract the contents of the file using unzip and move the baseq2 directory.
    unzip q2-314-demo-x86.exe
    cd Install/Data
    mv baseq2 /usr/local/quake2

If you place the baseq2 directory someplace other than /usr/local/quake2, you will need to specify where you put it using the --with-baseq2 argument to configure when building the quagents system.

Using the commercial version of Quake2

If you can find a copy of the original retail CDROM containing the full game you can simply copy the baseq2 directory from it to /usr/local/quake2. The full version of the game has more resources, but that's probably not an issue for you if you want to develop quagents (as opposed to playing quake).

It used to be quite hard to find the original game, but recently this seems to have gotten easier.
