Bachelors Degrees

B.A. Computer Science

The most memorable and significant part of my time at UR has unequivocally been the people I’ve met and the relationships I’ve built. While there are undoubtedly many amazing people to meet at UR and many places and venues to meet them, I would like to specifically thank Professors Xu and Luo for introducing me to the world of computer vision through their courses and mentorship. My experiences with them both made me more confident in problem-solving and ultimately made me confident in my efforts to pursue software engineering as a career. I would also like to thank Professor Purtee for introducing me to Computer Science in general, and later to Machine Learning, which sparked a passion for me. I’d also like to personally thank the debaters and coaches at the UR Debate Union for making my experience at UR unforgettable; it has been an absolute pleasure being the Policy Debate Captain of this amazing organization for the past three years. Undoubtedly, my Computer Science courses and professors, along with my experience in the UR Debate Union, have prepared me for a lifetime of learning, which I am excited to continue as a Software Development Engineer at Amazon shortly after graduation.

B.A. Computer Science

In addition to CS, Michael achieved minors in Linguistics and in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies. Among his favorite CS classes were the web design courses. Michael's passion for computer science and education motivated him to be a teaching assistant, which he enjoyed doing for multiple semesters. Outside of academics, Michael immersed himself in student life. As a member of No Jackets Required (NJR), he sang and played guitar in at least twelve shows, including two that he proposed, and for several of the shows, took a leadership role as member of the show team. Michael served on NJR’s executive board for a year as the Open Mic and Jam Coordinator. Taking on this position during the first year of the pandemic, he successfully created events for people to engage with music and each other safely such as through open mics on Zoom. In addition to NJR, Michael has been a member of Off Broadway on Campus (OBOC) for the past eight semesters. From the moment he joined OBOC, he threw himself into the deep end by directing the new members’ number and pushing himself by auditioning for solos. In the future, Michael plans to pursue jobs in web development, in game development, or in other creative and technical extensions of computer science. He hopes to someday continue his education and study education and policy so he can advocate for and help work towards more inclusive, equitable, and accessible spaces in higher education and computer science.

My time at UR has been a wonderful experience, and as a result, I’m graduating with a BA in Computer Science and minors in Digital Media Studies and Psychology. I’ve met many professors and friends who have influenced me greatly, and I’m incredibly grateful for their support and the never-ending support of my family. My family’s understanding and support meant the world to me when I changed majors and transferred to UR. While at UR, I’ve been a TA for two CS classes, and I also served as Vice President of UR’s chapter of Engineers without Borders. In my senior year, I had the pleasure of exploring machine learning for network security through an independent study with Professor Purtee. That, coupled with my previous curiosity, made me realize that I want to specialize in networking and network security. I want to thank Professor Purtee for his support and willingness to listen to me ramble about network security and adversarial machine learning algorithms. First to God be the glory for his grace is an epitome of my existence. To Rebecca Zeigler Mano and the Education Matters team who introduced me to the University of Rochester, which has been my home for the last 4 years, I say thank you. As I look back, I only had a dream when I came to Rochester and now, I can safely say that the people I met here, advisors, friends and professors made this day possible and will forever hold a special place in my heart. My plans after graduation are simple. I will be working full-time at some prestigious fruit company in the Seattle office. As I sign out, I wanna say, "Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes ... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. ... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things. ... They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do and that's everyone in this room", Steve Jobs.
