CSC 249/449 Computer Vision: Resources
This class will involve a significant amount of experimentation with
image processing and computer vision algorithms.
There are a number of resources - software, hardware, and human - in
the department to make life easier and more interesting.
Some of these are outlined below, along with pointers to more information.
Others you may discover or develop on your own.
Lab etiquette and care of equipment
The lab space that you will be using for this course is a general
research resource, which means that there may very well be
other experiments using the same space and equipment.
This means that you need to take ordinary care not to disrupt the
work of other people using the lab.
The biggest complaint in the past has been general messiness,
but if everyone follows a few simple procedures, 90% of the problems
can be avoided.

If you make a mess, clean it up. Don't leave papers, books, construction
materials, and equipment lying around.
Especially do not leave soda cans, candy wrappers, or any sort of food
or food residue. Cans get tipped, sticky stuff gets spread, and it gums
up the equipment.

If you take something out, put it back where you got it from when
you are finished. This especially includes cables and connectors
which are always getting misplaced.

If you re-wire a setup, put it back the way it was when you are done,
unless you know for sure that whoever set it up doesn't need
it anymore.

If you break something, (or find it broken) TELL ME so we can fix it.
You're not going to get in too much trouble, but an unexpectedly
broken item inconveniences everyone.
The equipment is generally pretty robust if you don't drop it
or try to force connections together, but there are a few
issues you need to be carful about.

Don't EVER leave a ccd chip in a camera exposed for more than the
second or two it takes to change lenses or put on a cap. Dust is
death to a ccd chip. Don't attempt to clean a CCD chip if it looks dirty.
Fingerprints are even worse, and any sort of rubbing can damage or displace
the chip. Aereosol blasts can crack the chip from thermal stresses.

Do not leave lenses out uncovered. Attach them to cameras, or put them
back in the cabinet, with lens caps on, if you can find them.

Avoid stepping on cables, and NEVER roll a chair across them.
Cables are more delicate than they look.

In general, you should avoid running cables across the floor where
they are likely to be stepped on or rolled over by chairs, and if you
do, don't leave them lying there when you have finished your work session.
